Villages of Umbria: from Montefalco to Spello among wine, oil and truffle

Today I propose an itinerary among the villages of Umbria , in the heart of the green region of Italy, from Montefalco to Spello, passing through Bevagna, along the Sagrantico DOCG road, in an area that produces extra virgin olive oil and black truffles of very high quality.

These villages of Umbria are famous for their history, for the artistic treasures that they preserve, for the museums and for the food and wine tradition, are you ready to discover them with me?

Villages of Umbria: Montefalco
This ancient village is famous for a native vine from which one of the best wines of our country is obtained, the Sagrantino DOCG. This red wine, intense and delicious, is obtained by cultivating the grapes exclusively in the territories surrounding the town of Montefalco, in a limited area of only 670 hectares.

Montefalco

Do not miss the beautiful square overlooked by ancient buildings and cafes with outdoor tables and the Church of San Francesco Museum, which houses the frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli, a Nativity attributed to Perugino and a series of frescoes from the Umbrian school of XV century. Do not miss the Church of Santa Chiara which houses the remains of the Saint.

The Town Hall dating back to the 13th century with a 15th-century loggia is also beautiful. Then let yourself be enchanted by its alleys and keep your camera handy, you’ll find yourself in front of wonderful views all to capture.

Villages of Umbria: Bevagna
Continuing north, in this fascinating and welcoming landscape, you will encounter another medieval village where time seems to have stopped. Closed between ancient walls the small village of Bevagna is a jewel of medieval architecture.

Piazza Silvestri is the heart of the village: the Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli overlooks it, which now houses the Torti Theater and the three Romanesque churches, of San Michele Arcangelo, San Domenico and San Silvestro Giacomo.

Bevagna

All around there are cobbled alleys with ancient buildings in local stone and the remains of a Roman theater, baths and other buildings of ancient Mevania that stood along the ancient Flaminia consular road.

If you love medieval settings I suggest you visit Bevagna during Il Mercato delle Gaite, an event that takes place every year in the second half of June and that will allow you to take a dip in the past: during those days the ancient shops of medieval crafts come alive ( including the paper mill, the cereria, the painter and the silk factory), the streets are populated by people who live their everyday life in vintage clothes, and you can eat the foods of the time in the taverns. You know the movie “We just have to cry” with Roberto Benigni and Massimo Troisi? You’ll feel like you’ve finished right in that movie!
